Argentina's coach walks out of press conference, citing England's disrespect after defeat

Argentina’s coach walks out of press briefing after England clash

Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi walked out of his post-match media briefing after just four minutes, accusing England of showing a “lack of respect” following their 31-24 Nations Championship defeat in Santiago del Estero, reports BritPanorama.

Contepomi grew increasingly frustrated as music and loud celebrations from England’s adjacent dressing room disrupted proceedings. He initially requested that an England representative in the room ask for the noise to be reduced. When the celebrations continued, he abruptly ended the session and departed, citing the disrespect being shown.

The incident capped off a turbulent evening that concluded Steve Borthwick’s side’s July tour on a triumphant note, though tensions between the two camps clearly extended well beyond the final whistle.

England established a commanding 19-3 advantage by half-time but were forced to withstand two determined Argentine fightbacks in the second period. The most contentious moment arrived in the third minute of overtime when Bautista Delguy crossed the whitewash for what appeared to be a match-saving try. However, television match official Brett Cronan disallowed the score after reviewing footage that showed Henry Slade’s outstanding last-ditch challenge had forced Delguy to ground the ball on the touchline rather than in the field of play.

Had the try stood and been converted, Argentina would have secured an unlikely draw from a match that had seemed beyond them at the interval. Borthwick completed his media obligations but was in no mood to discuss the disciplinary issues that nearly derailed his team’s victory. “I’m delighted for the players. They showed incredible spirit, led brilliantly by Jamie George,” the England head coach said.

He singled out Slade’s match-winning intervention for particular praise. “It’s almost unfair to pull out one example but Henry Slade’s tackle at the end was incredible,” Borthwick added. “It shows the fight that’s in this group of players, as well as their togetherness and connection.” When pressed on his side’s poor discipline, Borthwick grew irritated. “I don’t think now is the time to be digging into that,” he responded. “This team has done really, really well. As ever you guys concentrate on the negativity. You’re like the negativity committee.”

England’s card count throughout the contest highlighted an ongoing disciplinary problem that has plagued Borthwick’s squad in recent months. Jack van Poortvliet, Alex Coles, Henry Pollock, and Emmanuel Iyogun all received yellow cards during the second half, leaving the visitors to play a combined nine minutes with just 13 players on the pitch during crucial closing stages when Argentina were pressing for an equalising score.

The four yellow cards in Santiago del Estero brought England’s tally to 14 across their previous eight Test matches, a statistic that continues to raise questions about the team’s ability to stay on the right side of match officials. The evening also featured Falklands Islands banners displayed among the home supporters, adding another layer of complexity to the already fraught atmosphere.

As the players left the pitch, it became evident that the match had implications beyond the scoreline — a reminder of how sports can intersect with national narratives and rivalries, with tensions simmering just below the surface.
