Alcaraz protests roof decision during chaotic Australian Open final against Djokovic

Australian Open final chaos over roof decision

During the final of the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz expressed his dissatisfaction with a decision regarding the court roof while competing against Novak Djokovic. The incident occurred after Alcaraz had levelled the match by winning the second set following a first-set loss, reports BritPanorama.

With rain predicted, the roof was closed but remained slightly ajar in the middle, leading to confusion. Alcaraz was visibly frustrated, confronting umpires and officials over the partially closed roof, which he felt should have remained open given that the weather had not yet deteriorated.

The young Spaniard, aiming to become the youngest male player to achieve a career Grand Slam, had voiced his concerns during the match. Commentary from former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash indicated he supported Alcaraz’s view, stating, “I agree with Carlos – if it’s not raining, open it. Carlos is very upset about it.”

Tim Henman, another commentator, shared similar sentiments, questioning the logic behind the roof being closed in such a manner if rain was imminent. Meanwhile, Australian Open chief Craig Tiley was observed communicating with officials as play continued and the third set commenced under the existing circumstance.

Initially, Djokovic had a strong start at Rod Laver Arena, breaking Alcaraz’s serve and winning the first set. However, the world No 1 managed to equalise in the second set with a break of his own. Preceding the final, Rafael Nadal, in attendance, expressed his support for Alcaraz over Djokovic, while acknowledging the significance of Djokovic’s achievements in the sport.

Nadal described his relationship with Alcaraz positively, remarking on their past shared experiences. As the match progressed, it was clear the tension surrounding the roof issue only added to the drama of the day.

The dual between Alcaraz and Djokovic, overshadowed by the off-court controversy, showcased the intensity of competition at the very highest level, a reminder that even within the most celebrated arenas, the rules and their interpretations can leave players—and occasionally fans—frustrated.
