UK seeks to mend relations between Trump and Zelensky after Russian diesel deal controversy

UK seeks to mediate tensions between Trump and Zelensky

Britain will try to build bridges between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky after an explosive row over the US President’s announcement of a deal to buy Russian diesel, defence secretary Wes Streeting has said, reports BritPanorama.

President Trump called for new leadership in Ukraine on Saturday, following President Zelensky’s sharp criticism of the plan. Diesel prices have surged in the US amid Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran.

In a surprising move, President Trump announced on Friday that the US would lift sanctions on Moscow, allowing the supply of approximately 300,000 metric tons of diesel to the US and global markets.

Ukraine has condemned the deal as “absolutely terrible,” with officials stating it appears to be a gift for President Putin. Mr Streeting remarked to Sky News that “it’s not the first time we’ve seen these sorts of tensions between Kyiv and Washington,” emphasizing the UK’s role in encouraging unity against Russian aggression.

He also suggested that President Trump is under significant pressure as upcoming elections loom. “Let’s be candid about this; midterms are coming up. Cost of living is an issue, and no doubt President Trump is feeling the same pressure that lots of leaders are facing in terms of wanting to ease cost of living pressures,” he said.

In response to the sanction lift announcement, President Zelensky stated: “Today, Russia said thank you for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia.” He warned that Moscow interprets any easing of pressure as a signal to escalate its attacks on Ukrainian cities.

This latest development underscores ongoing geopolitical tensions and the complexities of international diplomacy amid conflict. The ramifications of these actions will require careful navigation as the situation evolves.
