Trump calls for Ukraine to replace Zelensky amid ongoing conflict

President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” criticizing Volodymyr Zelensky for his handling of the ongoing war that has persisted since Russia’s invasion four years ago, reports BritPanorama.

Speaking to reporters at the White House en route to a rally in Tennessee, Trump suggested that a new leader could initiate a peace deal, asserting, “for some reason (Zelensky) never does.” His remarks came in response to questions about his recent agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply diesel to the U.S. as fuel costs surged ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump claimed, “Zelensky could have settled this war many times, many many times, and he chooses not to.” This comment followed an inquiry regarding Trump’s controversial partnership with Putin, raising broader concerns about his recent sanctions targeting Russia, which aimed to hold Moscow accountable for its actions in Ukraine.

Amid rising fuel prices in the U.S., Trump reiterated his view that the war should never have begun, characterizing his own potential presidency as a solution to the situation. “If I were president, if the election weren’t rigged, I would have been president, and that war would have never started,” he stated, repeating familiar claims surrounding the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

As the conflict endures, “the long-range aerial war” continues between Russia and Ukraine, with reports indicating that over 60 individuals have died following increased Russian shelling in recent days. Both nations remain stalled at the front lines, compounding the humanitarian crisis.

Trump further lambasted Zelensky, alleging that he “wants to make problems for the world,” particularly for American farmers and ranchers affected by fuel shortages. “He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers with diesel fuel because Russia supplies a large portion of the diesel fuel throughout the world,” he asserted.

In response to Trump’s allegations, Zelensky sharply criticized the diesel deal, suggesting that it undermines genuine partnerships. “I believe our team is simply being used as a smoke screen, and that is certainly not fair,” he stated. He branded Trump’s collaboration with Putin as a “weak decision” and warned that “gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilised world.”

The exchange highlights the complex and often fraught dynamics of international alliances, particularly in the context of ongoing threats to Ukraine’s sovereignty, and reveals the significant political implications of the war on domestic fronts. As the situation unfolds, the broader ramifications for U.S. foreign policy and electoral dynamics remain to be fully understood amidst the continuing conflict.
