Mourinho’s return fails to thaw dressing room tensions at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has reportedly failed to ease tension inside Real Madrid’s dressing room, with a Spanish radio journalist claiming the atmosphere remains “icy” despite the Portuguese coach’s return to the club, reports BritPanorama.
Last season was marred by reports of discord among players and coaches, culminating in a physical altercation between midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni in May. Despite Mourinho’s reputation for fostering discipline and intensity since his arrival in the summer, the difficult relationships within the squad appear to persist.
According to Cadena SER, tensions have escalated with reports of players recently coming to blows in the dressing room, though their identities remain undisclosed. Journalist Anton Meana noted that the atmosphere has not improved since last season, stating, “The only problem is that the atmosphere in the dressing room is still as icy as it was five months ago.”
This ongoing friction in the dressing room, unaffected by Mourinho’s intensity, coincides with scrutiny surrounding the situation of Kylian Mbappé, who is recovering from a left-knee injury sustained while representing France. The club has diagnosed him with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee after he withdrew early from the national squad.
Mbappé’s public appearance in Paris after the injury has further added to the noise, with reports varying about Mourinho’s reaction. While the Spanish outlet AS indicated that Mbappé’s trip was sanctioned by the club’s coaching staff and doctors, Marca journalist Pablo Polo reported dissatisfaction from Mourinho over the forward’s recovery management and readiness for training. He has previously cautioned players about engaging in risky activities, asserting, “You are a football player 24 hours a day.”
Despite winning five of their first seven league matches under Mourinho, Real Madrid currently sit six points behind Barcelona. They are set to host Villarreal on Saturday, followed by a Champions League match against Roma next Wednesday.
In the middle of such crucial fixtures, the persistence of internal strife is a stark reminder of how quickly harmony can unravel in elite sports teams.
