Jose Mourinho rebuffs comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal camp

Jose Mourinho has rejected claims that he commented on Cristiano Ronaldo’s dramatic departure from Portugal’s national team camp, dismissing reports about his views as ‘fake news’, reports BritPanorama.

The Real Madrid boss was reportedly linked to the growing dispute following Ronaldo’s exit after he was benched by head coach Jorge Jesus during Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway earlier this week. Ronaldo subsequently informed federation president Pedro Proença of his decision to leave the squad, stating that he would provide an explanation “in due time.”

Mourinho took to social media to refute any suggestion that he had made comments regarding Ronaldo’s situation. “Too many fake news on my comments about Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese Federation,” he said, according to Fabrizio Romano. “I did not make any comments.”

Portugal proceeded with their match without their captain, achieving a 4-2 victory over Denmark. Goals from Joao Cancelo, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, and Joao Felix secured the win, while Ronaldo watched from afar after his departure. Despite the outcome, Jesuss remarked that Ronaldo’s absence had no effect on group cohesion, although he acknowledged that the veteran forward was displeased with not starting.

This incident adds to the ongoing narrative surrounding Ronaldo’s evolving role within the national team, especially given that head coach Jesus has emphasized that no player is guaranteed a starting position. Mourinho’s historical connection with Ronaldo, having managed him at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, has kept public speculation alive regarding his opinions on the matter, especially following his recent return to Real Madrid.

Following the match, Jesus expressed satisfaction with the team’s unity, remarking on the belief his players have in his coaching tactics. “If that’s having a group in my hand, then I do, because they go hand in hand with me and my ideas,” he asserted.

As debates linger about Ronaldo’s status and influence over the squad, one thing remains clear: in the world of football, where egos and ambitions clash, the dynamics can shift rapidly — a reminder of how dearly even legends must negotiate their place.
