Russian strikes on Ukraine kill at least 21 as Kyiv braces for major attack

Russian missile strikes kill 21 civilians in Ukraine

Russian missiles and drones pounded Kyiv and a dozen other Ukrainian regions overnight into Wednesday, killing at least 21 civilians, including four children, and wounding around 60 in Moscow’s latest devastating barrage, reports BritPanorama.

Ukraine had anticipated the attack, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning the previous day that intelligence services had concluded that Russia was building up for a “massive” strike.

Although Ukraine was aware of the impending assault, which coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 74th birthday, it could not completely fend it off.

The deaths and damage underscored the challenges Ukraine faces in countering Russia’s ballistic missiles and the newly deployed jet-powered drones used in these escalating bombardments. Without sufficient ammunition for its U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, Ukraine struggles to intercept Russian missiles effectively, while efforts are underway to develop a new generation of interceptors capable of engaging Moscow’s high-flying drones.

Russia and Ukraine are entrenched in a long-range aerial conflict as both sides remain largely deadlocked on the battlefield, over four and a half years since Moscow’s full-scale invasion. The relentless aerial attacks inflict harm on Russia, but they could be catastrophic for Ukraine.

U.S.-led peace initiatives seem unlikely to yield immediate results, as discussions about low-level technical talks continue. Meanwhile, Putin persists with the invasion, under the impression that Ukrainians will ultimately concede and that Kyiv’s Western allies will not maintain their support, according to Western analysts.

“Russia is pursuing a deliberate strategy of terror,” stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on X. “Trying to make daily life impossible for Ukrainians who want to live in peace.”

A recent Russian strike destroyed an apartment block in Pryluky, located in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, including four children, and injuring approximately 50, officials reported.

Fatalities were also recorded in three other Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv, as noted by Zelenskyy.

“The Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively,” the Ukrainian leader remarked on social media.
