UK agrees to £662 million deal with France to curb small boat crossings amidst failures

UK to pay France over £1 billion to tackle migrant crossings

Britain is set to provide France with over £1 billion to address the ongoing issue of small-boat migrants crossing the English Channel, despite years of ineffective measures, reports BritPanorama.

The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to sign a £662 million deal with Paris, which will extend until 2029. This funding follows an earlier commitment of £480 million agreed upon in 2023, bringing the total to over £1 billion over six years.

Critics point out that France successfully prevented only 35% of crossings last year, raising concerns over the effectiveness of this substantial financial investment. The new financial package aims to enhance enforcement efforts, including the deployment of drones for monitoring coastal activities.

Nearly 1,100 police, intelligence, and military officers will be assigned to the operation — a 40% increase from previous deployments. Additionally, a new riot squad of 50 specially trained officers will be tasked with dispersing gatherings on beaches.

Significantly, £160 million of the total sum is contingent on demonstrable reductions in crossing numbers. Should the updated tactics fail to yield results within a year, the funding may be reallocated or withdrawn entirely.

Mahmood asserted that the initiative is designed to halt illegal migration and bring human traffickers to justice. She is also set to expand the existing “one in, one out” pilot scheme, which since August has returned approximately 500 individuals while relocating a similar number to the UK.

The opposition has criticized the financial commitment, with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stating that France should not receive any funds unless it significantly reduces the number of boats crossing the Channel.

This complex arrangement underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the UK and France in managing cross-Channel migration, an issue that remains fraught with political tensions and urgent humanitarian concerns.

The UK’s strategy reflects a growing trend of nations grappling with migration challenges in a shifting geopolitical landscape. As policies evolve, the effectiveness of these financial investments and enforcement tactics will be scrutinized in the coming months.
