T-shirt featuring guillotine imagery removed from sale following backlash
The creators of a controversial T-shirt featuring guillotine imagery, which had sparked outrage after being showcased at a Green Party festival, have withdrawn the item from sale, reports BritPanorama.
Produced by Sabcat Printing, the £20 shirt depicted a guillotine alongside the phrase “We’re only making plans for Nigel.” Following its display at a recent event in Bristol, a photo of an attendee wearing the shirt, which called for the decapitation of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, was spread on social media and liked by Green Party leader Zack Polanski.
In response to growing criticism, which intensified after the tragic death of former MP Ann Widdecombe, allegedly by a political activist, the anarchist cooperative based in Manchester clarified that the shirt was intended as satire. However, the sentiment has not quelled outrage from Farage and his supporters, who have demanded police action against Polanski.
“It was not meant to be taken literally,” said a representative from Sabcat Printing, referring to the T-shirt’s original intent. “Unfortunately, it has got Zack Polanski into trouble. It is not inciting anything,” they added, emphasizing the company’s discretion in removing the item from circulation. The representative further noted that only a limited number of shirts had been sold, quantifying the sales to fewer than 20.
Following the backlash, Polanski deleted the contentious photo, stressing that he does not condone messages that could be interpreted as threatening or dangerous. As the political climate remains sensitive in light of recent violence, stakeholders continue to grapple with the boundaries of political satire.
