Scientists warn that cities on the moon may not be viable due to water scarcity

The possibility of establishing significant human settlements on the Moon faces new challenges, as a recent study reveals that even large amounts of lunar water may not sustain such populations for long. This finding emerges amidst discussions about the future of space colonization, particularly in light of plans purported by figures like Elon Musk. According to the published study, even trillions of pounds of water trapped in lunar glass beads will not suffice for sustaining extensive human life on the Moon, reports BritPanorama.

Scientists, including lead author Martin Elvis from the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Jonathan McDowell of Durham University Space Research Centre, evaluated the potential longevity of various populations using a “generous” water estimate of 1 billion tons. Their analysis indicates that a city of around 1 million inhabitants could exhaust this water in less than two and a half years. If water recycling methods, akin to the 98% recovery rate achieved by the International Space Station, are employed, it would extend the duration to about 100 years, although this scenario would require extreme conservation efforts from residents.

The study highlighted stark contrasts for different community sizes. For example, a city of 100,000 people could survive for about 1,000 years, while a smaller town with 10,000 residents could potentially last for up to 10,000 years, provided future solutions for water shortages become viable. Researchers pointed out that reliance on lunar water alone may not be sustainable, suggesting that water might need to be imported from other sources within our solar system.

Astronomer Ian Crawford remarked on the importance of this study for grounding future plans for lunar settlements. He emphasized that to establish such colonies, importing sufficient water supplies would likely be crucial. Additionally, he highlighted the scientific significance of lunar water, which retains a historical record of the environment from which Earth emerged.

This research also raises questions about the management of lunar water resources. The potential for a “Moon Village,” a settlement of around 1,000 people, appears plausible, although the extraction and use of resources must be balanced against their scientific value. The study concluded that international cooperation is vital to prevent a ‘gold rush’ mentality that could deplete lunar water supplies before comprehensive scientific inquiries are conducted.

In conclusion, as stakeholders in the space race contemplate the establishment of permanent human habitats beyond Earth, this study underscores the complexity of sustaining such efforts—showing that careful planning and international dialogue will be essential in navigating the challenges that lie ahead.
