Mohamed Salah’s transfer to Besiktas fails to materialise

Mohamed Salah’s anticipated transfer to Besiktas has fallen through after three separate rounds of negotiations failed to produce an agreement, leaving the Egyptian forward in limbo as a free agent, reports BritPanorama.

The 34-year-old, who departed Anfield at the conclusion of last season — a full year before his contract was due to expire — had appeared close to securing a move to the Turkish giants. The two sides had reached an understanding over a one-year deal with an option for a second campaign.

However, Besiktas sporting director Onder Ozen confirmed that the club has stepped away from the table due to financial disagreements that ultimately proved insurmountable, with the Istanbul side refusing to budge from their position.

Salah now finds himself back at square one in his search for a new employer. Ozen laid bare the timeline of the breakdown in a press conference, explaining, “We met with Salah three times before the financial part of the negotiations was discussed. Up to this point, everything was smooth.” He noted that issues began when financial discussions commenced, stating, “When the financial side began, the initial smoothness slowed down from July 21st onwards.”

Additionally, Ozen suggested that Salah himself may not have been fully aware of the impasse, indicating, “I can assume that a respected athlete like Salah was unaware of this.” The director also revealed that Salah’s representatives disclosed they were engaged with another club. “But Besiktas will not make another offer,” he insisted.

Salah’s departure from Liverpool perplexed many supporters, particularly as he had signed a two-year contract extension just the previous April. Yet, his standing at Anfield remains beyond question; across a remarkable nine-year tenure, Salah scored 257 goals and provided 123 assists in 442 appearances, contributing to two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.

While his accomplishments at Liverpool are significant, the circumstances of his exit continue to leave fans bewildered. The question of where Salah will end up next remains open, with reports indicating he holds multiple formal proposals from clubs in Turkey, as well as interest from both the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer in the United States.

Prominent Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu stated that Salah and his long-standing agent Ramy Abbas were scheduled to meet to assess the official bids on the table. In addition, Atletico Madrid and Roma have also been mentioned as potential suitors for the prolific forward, who, being available on a free transfer, will attract considerable attention from various clubs eager to secure his services.

With Salah now positioning himself at a career crossroads, the intrigue surrounding his next move serves as a vivid reminder of how swiftly fortunes can shift in the world of football.
