Chelsea close to securing Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea are on the verge of completing a deal to bring Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge from Brighton & Hove Albion, reports BritPanorama.
The Seagulls have cleared the 35-year-old striker to undergo a medical, which is expected to occur before the week concludes. Should all go as planned, Welbeck would link up with the Chelsea squad in Hong Kong.
Substantial progress has been made in negotiations between the clubs, and all parties anticipate that the transfer will be concluded shortly. The specific financial terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
This move follows Chelsea’s decision to abandon efforts to recruit Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, who opted to remain with the club to lead them in their first European campaign in over 50 years. Sunderland’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, confirmed this conclusion after a recent match against Liverpool, highlighting Xhaka’s commitment to the club.
With Xhaka out of the picture, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is now focusing on seasoned players who can provide guidance to the club’s younger talents. This shift in strategy contrasts with the club’s previous emphasis on acquiring players under the age of 25.
In addition to Welbeck, Chelsea is also eyeing 36-year-old Jordan Henderson, who is a free agent after a successful stint at Brentford. While other Premier League clubs are interested, Chelsea is viewed as the frontrunner to secure his services, reflecting Alonso’s desire to blend experience with youth in his squad.
Welbeck has enjoyed a productive tenure at Brighton, scoring 51 goals and contributing 18 assists across 201 appearances since his arrival from Watford in 2020. His performance last season, with 13 Premier League goals, was a career-best, bolstering Brighton’s eighth-place finish and subsequent Conference League qualification.
Upon joining Chelsea, he would compete with Joao Pedro for a starting position, potentially pushing the young forward Marc Guiu further down the selection list. As the transfer window progresses, Chelsea is also expected to move on at least two strikers from their current roster, with the futures of players like Emmanuel Emegha, Liam Delap, and Nicolas Jackson remaining uncertain.
