Tories urge Angela Rayner to disclose documents related to £40,000 stamp duty settlement

Angela Rayner under pressure to release documents in £40,000 tax bill row, reports BritPanorama.

Angela Rayner is facing increasing demands from Conservative Party members to publish all documents that justify her claims of being cleared of deliberate wrongdoing regarding a £40,000 unpaid stamp duty bill following the purchase of a flat on the south coast.

Following the settlement of her tax bill, Rayner asserts that she has been cleared by HMRC, contending that she received no penalty for her actions. However, Shadow Cabinet Minister Alex Burghart has challenged her assertion, stating, “Angela Rayner’s carefully worded statement cannot disguise the fact that she has still had to settle up an unpaid tax bill of £40,000.” He added, “If she wants the top job, she should publish all correspondence with HMRC in full.”

Reform MP Robert Jenrick echoed this sentiment, suggesting that if Rayner is indeed confident about her clearance, “she’d have no problem publishing the evidence.” This demand for transparency follows her earlier declarations of having taken reasonable care based on expert tax advice in her transactions.

In her own comments, Rayner welcomed HMRC’s findings, claiming the organisation has absolved her of any wrongdoing. She stated, “I set out to pay the correct amount of tax,” asserting that she acted in good faith. However, Dan Neidle, founder of Tax Policy Associates, noted that Rayner had obtained legal advice on the property purchase from two sets of lawyers who both recommended seeking further tax advice — advice she ultimately did not pursue, contributing to the tax error.

Despite the scrutiny and calls for greater accountability, HMRC has indicated that it cannot comment on individual cases due to taxpayer confidentiality laws. Still, this situation continues to raise questions about transparency and responsibility in tax matters within the political sphere.

As the debate unfolds, it is clear that the implications of Rayner’s tax settlement go beyond her personal finances, touching on broader themes of accountability and public trust in political figures.

Each political actor involved must consider how transparency in financial conduct shapes public perception and the integrity of democracy in the UK.
