Keir Starmer emphasizes importance of EU ties at summit

Sir Keir Starmer will inform European leaders that the UK’s “national interest” lies in forging deeper links with Brussels, reports BritPanorama. The Prime Minister is expected to deliver these remarks during a summit, asserting that prosperity undeniably correlates with “closer economic ties” with the European Union.

In tandem with his attendance at the European Political Community meeting in Armenia, he aims to initiate discussions on the UK joining the EU’s £78 billion loan scheme intended to assist Ukraine. This follows recent polling indicating that 87% of Labour Party members support rejoining the EU, highlighting a significant shift in attitude within the party.

In a statement on his online Substack account, Starmer noted: “We can see now that Brexit has damaged the economy. So there’s no doubt in my mind where the national interest lies today, and that is in closer economic ties with Europe.” He plans to actively engage with counterparts at the EPC meeting regarding enhancing support for Kyiv in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

During discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Starmer underscored the necessity of strengthening defense collaboration with European nations to support Ukraine. He intends to announce the UK’s commitment to commence negotiations related to the EU loan scheme, which would bolster efforts to ensure Ukraine receives essential military equipment. Additionally, this move is seen as a boost for the UK’s defense industry while likely involving a membership fee for participation.

Government officials regard this initiative as a meaningful step toward reestablishing relations with the EU, particularly in the realm of defense and security cooperation. Starmer has acknowledged that Brexit has adversely affected the UK economy, positioning closer economic affiliations as part of the recovery strategy.

He has called for the UK and EU to expedite progress on defense cooperation during his trip. In parallel, Number 10 is anticipated to impose further sanctions on Russian companies this week aimed at disrupting military supply chains.

Starmer stated, “When the UK and the European Union work together, we all reap the benefits — and in these volatile times we need to go further and faster on defense to keep people safe.” He emphasized the urgency of negotiations to ensure Ukraine receives necessary equipment while simultaneously advancing opportunities for British industry.

Discussions regarding the framework for accessing the EU loan for Ukraine will take place in the forthcoming weeks. The repercussions of the ongoing situation related to the conflict in Iran are also set to feature prominently on the agenda, with Starmer advocating for measures to mitigate economic impacts and foster de-escalation.

Dame Priti Patel, the shadow Foreign Secretary, expressed her unwavering commitment to Ukraine, stating: “The Conservative Party will always stand firmly with Ukraine, for as long as it takes. We were first movers on lethal aid, we committed £3 billion a year in military support, and we will back any serious measure that keeps Ukrainian forces in the fight and degrades Russia’s ability to wage this war.”

Such developments reflect a critical juncture in the UK’s approach to Ukraine and its broader engagement with the European Union, underlining both diplomatic and strategic priorities amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
