New messages reveal Labour minister's candid criticisms and job discussions with Peter Mandelson

More messages between Lord Mandelson and Labour minister emerge

More exchanges between Lord Mandelson and a Cabinet Office minister have surfaced, raising questions about transparency, as Labour maintains that all pertinent materials were released, reports BritPanorama.

Cabinet Office minister Darren Jones is seen disparaging colleagues, expressing discontent about unions, and contemplating career changes. One message was particularly notable, sent on the same day Sir Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his role as US ambassador.

In the communications, Jones expressed admiration, stating, “You’ve been doing such a great job, and you worked wonders with Trump. I’m so sorry about today.” Following this, he sought Mandelson’s advice amid “reshuffle chatter” regarding potential job changes.

When prompted about preferred positions, Jones mentioned, “DBT [Business and Trade], DSIT [Science, Innovation and Technology] or DESNZ [Energy Security and Net Zero] in that order.” His remarks also touched upon discussions around Port Talbot steelworks, where he noted that Business Department advisers often aligned with union interests.

Days following these reports, a claim emerged regarding a potential cover-up, as it was revealed that the Prime Minister and Chancellor utilized WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature, resulting in some communications, including those involving Mandelson, being lost.

Shadow Minister Alex Burghart remarked that it “beggars belief” how little evidence existed concerning the Prime Minister’s involvement in Mandelson’s appointment.

This situation underscores ongoing challenges within Labour regarding accountability and transparency, particularly surrounding key figures and their influences in government decisions.

The publication of these messages raises significant issues about internal party dynamics and the handling of sensitive exchanges, reflecting broader themes of governance and trust within political institutions.
