Michael Marra elected as new Scottish Labour leader
Labour MSP Michael Marra has been elected as his party’s new Scottish leader, succeeding Anas Sarwar who quit Holyrood to join Andy Burnham’s government, reports BritPanorama.
MSPs Marra and Joe Fagan competed for the position after Sarwar stood down in July, describing it as the “hardest job in British politics.”
Marra assumes leadership following the party’s historic defeat in the May Scottish Parliament elections, where Labour returned just 17 MSPs, marking its worst result since devolution.
Sarwar, now a Lord, initially pledged to remain after this defeat but resigned in July to take up a role as a trade minister in Burnham’s government.
This change in leadership follows Sarwar’s notable call for former Labour leader Keir Starmer to resign as prime minister, making it a significant moment in party dynamics. Marra is now Scottish Labour’s 11th leader of the devolution era, excluding interim leaders.
Labour faces pivotal challenges ahead, with Marra tasked to guide the party’s resurgence in Scotland, especially after the recent electoral setbacks.
