Green Party leader campaigns in multilingual outreach ahead of by-election

Zack Polanski is actively campaigning for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, after the resignation of former Labour prime minister Sir Keir Starmer earlier this month, reports BritPanorama.

Polanski’s campaign includes outreach in various languages, with his latest appeal delivered in Bengali. Previously, he had engaged voters in Urdu and French. This multilingual strategy highlights demographic diversity in the constituency, where Bengali, along with French and Spanish, ranks as one of the most prevalent languages, according to Camden Council.

In a video shared on social media, Polanski stated in Bengali: “I’m Zack Polanski and I’m standing to be the MP for Holborn and St Pancras. The Green Party has forced Labour to change some of their most unpopular policies. Vote Green on 8th October.” Observers note that this approach aims to resonate with local communities.

However, Polanski’s strategy has faced criticism. London Mayor Sadiq Khan previously mocked Polanski during a climate debate for his Urdu-speaking video, quipping, “I thought as the member is so proficient in Urdu that I would speak in Urdu.”

Additionally, Conservative MP Katie Lam has condemned Polanski’s multilingual campaigning, labelling it as “divisive and dishonest” in a social media post. She argued that such tactics promote group-based grievance politics.

The by-election on October 8 is widely viewed as a contest primarily between Polanski and Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali, leader of Camden Council. A victory for Polanski would increase the number of Green Party MPs to six, following a recent win in Gorton and Denton.

Furthermore, Labour sources have indicated that this by-election serves as a critical gauge for party leader Andy Burnham regarding the potential for an early general election. Their analysis outlines that Polanski’s candidacy tests whether leadership changes have diminished the Green Party’s appeal to Labour supporters.

As the campaign progresses, the dynamics of this constituency could reflect broader electoral trends, suggesting shifting allegiances within the voter base that both parties will closely monitor.
