David Miliband aims for US ambassador role over cabinet position under Andy Burnham

David Miliband seeks US ambassador role instead of Cabinet post

David Miliband is actively pursuing the position of Britain’s ambassador to Washington, eschewing a return to the Cabinet under Andy Burnham, reports BritPanorama.

The former Foreign Secretary, widely regarded as a potential political comeback figure, is seeking this diplomatic role as Burnham prepares to assume office. A well-placed source indicated that taking on the ambassadorship would enable Miliband to re-enter public life while keeping his family in America, where he has resided since exiting frontline politics.

Current ambassador Christian Turner, whose term lasts four years, may be replaced if Miliband’s ambitions materialise. The source elaborated, “David is pushing hard for it. He’d much rather have Washington than the Foreign Office. It means he can keep his family where they are while still taking on one of the biggest jobs in British diplomacy.”

Miliband has been living in New York since 2013, holding the position of president and chief executive of the International Rescue Committee. His recent public endorsement of Burnham’s devolution agenda has amplified speculation regarding his return to frontline politics.

However, the notion of Miliband resuming a senior role has created some apprehension within Labour, particularly regarding a potential scenario where both he and his brother Ed Miliband might occupy high offices—this arrangement could result in more Miliband representation than women in the top roles of government. Such concerns come on the heels of a scandal involving Peter Mandelson and the prospect of Miliband being Burnham’s third ambassador to Washington within just one year.

Both David Miliband and Andy Burnham’s spokespeople have refrained from commenting on the situation.

This development highlights the ongoing reshaping of political dynamics within the UK as discussions about leadership and representation intensify. The intersection of personal ambition and public service, especially in diplomatic roles, continues to evolve in a post-Brexit landscape.
