Andy Burnham urged to appoint continuity Cabinet amid campaign against Ed Miliband

Andy Burnham is facing calls to establish a “continuity Cabinet” as a campaign intensifies to block Ed Miliband from becoming Chancellor, reports BritPanorama.

The principal figures inherited from Sir Keir Starmer are likely to remain in key positions, albeit with potential changes in roles.

The race for the Treasury is quickly evolving into a five-horse contest involving Wes Streeting, Ed Miliband, Yvette Cooper, John Healey, and Shabana Mahmood.

Supporters of Burnham assert that no ministerial appointments have been confirmed as he works to formulate his strategy prior to a formal “coronation” on July 17. Nevertheless, a senior Labour source indicated: “Andy will likely give jobs to most Cabinet Ministers, not least because, unlike him, they were in place when he won the general election.”

Concerns about the capabilities of potential candidates have also been voiced. A Labour veteran commented on the current parliamentary cohort, remarking on an apparent lack of talent among the backbenchers, condemning them as “probably the most intellectually inferior, disloyal bunch of MPs we’ve ever had.”

A campaign aimed at preventing Miliband’s ascension to the Treasury is also gaining momentum, with suggestions that Burnham recognizes the political risks involved. Sources close to Burnham suggest he intends to appoint several allies to pivotal roles.

Angela Rayner is reportedly interested in the Education Secretary position, a role she previously shadowed during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. Additionally, key figures from Burnham’s Makerfield campaign, such as Louise Haigh and Anneliese Midgley, are expected to secure appointments in his Cabinet.

As the Labour leadership transition unfolds, the implications of these decisions will significantly shape the party’s trajectory and challenge dynamics within the UK government.

The complexities of party politics serve as a reminder of the persisting tensions within Labour, particularly regarding leadership compatibility and strategic direction. As Burnham prepares to assert his influence, his choices will be scrutinized not only by party members but also by the wider electorate.
