Counter-terrorism investigation reopened into attempted burglary at Ann Widdecombe’s home

Counter-terrorism officers have reopened a probe into an attempted burglary at the London residence of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe last July, following new developments, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred on July 9, 2024, when Widdecombe was allegedly assaulted with a hammer 21 times at her home in Dartmoor, Devon. An employee discovered her injured, prompting a police response.

Initial investigations were launched by the Metropolitan Police, with support from Counter Terrorism Policing London. However, no arrests were made at the time and the case was closed, pending further evidence.

Authorities have now identified a new line of enquiry that was not previously pursued, prompting the reopening of the investigation. This effort aims to address the potential implications of the case, given the nature of the crime.

In response to the renewed focus on this investigation, Counter Terrorism Policing London has made a mandatory conduct referral to the police watchdog. They have committed to fully engaging with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) on this matter.

Vicki Evans, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, stated, “The victims and families in both investigations have been updated today, and we continue to support them. Given the nature of this matter and the significant public interest in the investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s situation, it was of critical importance for us to provide this update.”

Evans urged the public and media to assist in seeking justice while being cautious about sharing speculation not endorsed by police. Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old local resident, was arrested in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, in connection with the incident.

The evolving nature of this investigation underscores the significant public concern surrounding high-profile cases and the challenges law enforcement faces in handling them. Clarity and accountability will be essential as this case develops.
