Granit Xhaka’s vaccination certificate scandal may lead to jail time
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is facing the possibility of jail time after admitting to acquiring a fraudulent Covid vaccination certificate, reports BritPanorama.
The 33-year-old midfielder disclosed the offence in an Instagram statement, revealing that the incident occurred in 2022 while he was still a player at Arsenal. Xhaka’s admission has drawn significant attention amid ongoing concerns about vaccination compliance in professional sports.
Swiss prosecutors are anticipated to impose a considerable fine on Xhaka, who is set to provide his account of the situation to investigators next month. The fallout from this revelation has already cost him his place in the Swiss national team, with football authorities in Switzerland confirming his omission from the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Xhaka expressed his regret in his social media post, reflecting on his state of mind at the time. “In recent days, there has been much reporting about a matter from my past. I would like to address this personally. Regarding the Covid-19 vaccination, I was personally very uncertain and had serious concerns at the time,” he stated. He acknowledged that he acted out of a tumultuous emotional state, which led him to procure a vaccination certificate instead of seeking proper clarification.
In light of his confession, Xhaka met with Swiss Football Association (SFV) officials, which resulted in the decision that he should not participate in upcoming matches. The SFV released a statement stating, “Following his personal statement regarding vaccination confirmation, Granit Xhaka will not take part in the upcoming gathering of the men’s national team.”
The SFV’s chief, Peter Knabel, noted that this decision was made collaboratively and affirmed that they would reassess the situation after the international window concludes.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office in Lucerne has officially initiated an investigation into Xhaka, examining whether his actions constitute forgery or document falsification. Swiss authorities have emphasized that the player is presumed innocent while the inquiry proceeds.
It is worth noting that Xhaka is unlikely to face repercussions in English football, as neither the English Football Association (FA) nor Premier League mandates required vaccination during the pandemic, meaning he did not violate any domestic regulations during his time at Arsenal. So far this season, Xhaka has been instrumental for Sunderland, helping the team secure a position of 14th place after their initial five matches.
