Rory McIlroy confirms return to golf at FedEx St Jude Championship
Rory McIlroy will return to competitive golf next week, participating in the FedExCup Playoffs opener at the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis, reports BritPanorama.
The Northern Irishman has been absent from the course since The Open Championship last month, marking his return to the tournament after missing it in the previous year. The event at TPC Southwind will also feature world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and defending FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood.
Justin Rose, last year’s winner of the FedEx St Jude Championship, has confirmed his participation as well. During his time away from golf, McIlroy traveled across Europe, enjoying a holiday in Ibiza where he was seen socialising in a nightclub, and spending time in Greece with fellow golfer Shane Lowry and their families.
Images shared by Lowry’s wife depict the golfers with their families, taking a break after a demanding season that involved participation in all four major championships. McIlroy had previously announced his need for a break following The Open, stating, “I was just sort of stuck in neutral for most of the week. Even par over the weekend is not going to get it done.”
Reflecting on his recent performances, he added, “I just felt like any time I got a little bit of momentum out there, I seemed to make a bogey. It was just one of those weeks I couldn’t get it going.” McIlroy acknowledged that this season mirrors last year’s trajectory, noting, “Obviously I won the first major of the year and fell off a little bit after that—but any time you win a major in a year, you have to be pleased about that.”
While McIlroy has hinted at a more selective approach to tournament participation, he remains focused on enjoying quality time with his family during the summer holidays. “Poppy’s got another four weeks off school until she goes back, so I’m just going to enjoy the summer holidays with her and Erica. That’s what I’m looking forward to the most,” he stated.
As McIlroy gears up for his return, the anticipation builds. His approach this season highlights a thoughtful balance between family commitments and competitive aspirations—reminding fans how personal circumstances can shape the professional narrative in sport.
