Jurgen Klopp calls for positive patriotism as Germany’s head coach

Jurgen Klopp used his inaugural press conference as Germany’s head coach on Thursday to issue a striking call for “positive patriotism,” urging the nation to “reclaim the flag” from extremist forces, reports BritPanorama.

The former Liverpool manager, who assumed his position following another disappointing World Cup campaign for the national side, unveiled an unusually large 44-man squad for upcoming Nations League fixtures, with sixteen members having never previously represented Germany at senior level.

Sporting a cap in the national colours with the phrase “One of 83 million” — a reference to the country’s population — Klopp stated: “I would like to reclaim the flag for myself, for all of us, if I’m being completely honest.” His bold selection policy indicates an intent to build new connections between supporters and the national team.

His remarks carried political undertones, addressing the Alternative for Germany party’s recent electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, where they captured 43.8 per cent of the vote, coming close to an outright majority in the regional parliament. “We had an election where some people may have thought it was OK, while others were saying, ‘my God, what is happening here?'” he remarked.

Klopp, 59, was quick to clarify that he does not consider himself a political “expert,” yet spoke with conviction about his vision for nationalism, preferring “positive patriotism” to “national pride,” which he views as potentially misleading. “I do not want to entrust national pride to the wrong people,” Klopp emphasized, adding: “I can be proud to be German while also being open-minded and diverse, and kind and friendly.”

He aims to reshape how Germans feel about displaying their national colours. “I want it so that when someone waves it, no one thinks: ‘What is wrong with you?'” Klopp explained. “Instead, I want people to understand: You are happy and realise how lucky you were to be born, grow up, or move to this wonderful country.”

The emphasis on inclusivity was deliberate, encompassing not only Germans by birth but also those who have chosen to make the country their home — a significant message against the backdrop of the AfD’s anti-immigration stance. No far-right party has governed a German state since the Second World War, adding gravity to Klopp’s intervention.

As Germany faces a rigorous schedule with four competitive fixtures in eleven days, including matches against the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia, Klopp’s comments bring a timely focus on both the sport and its broader societal implications.

The anti-immigration AfD is projected to perform well in upcoming regional elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, ensuring a politically charged environment during Klopp’s tenure. However, Klopp acknowledged the limitations of football in achieving significant change, noting that ensuring adequate healthcare staffing is more crucial than any sporting achievement.

Regardless, he contended that football has a unique ability to “foster a sense of community, so that people can truly feel the power of sport.” In an era where sports often transcend mere entertainment, Klopp’s vision seeks to reconnect the game with its foundational values, reminding all that in unity, there is strength.
