Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly steps down after stake sale
Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly has left his role as Chelsea chairman after selling his stakes following more than four years with the club, reports BritPanorama.
Director Mark Walter has also exited, with their shares sold to private equity firm Clearlake Capital. The transaction sees Clearlake, which already owned 61.5 per cent of the club, gain full control, as Boehly and Walter relinquish their interests.
Boehly and Walter had taken control of the five-time Premier League champions in May 2022, acquiring the club from Roman Abramovich during a sale mandated by the UK Government in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The club confirmed the departure in a statement on Wednesday night, noting that affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group, LP, will acquire Boehly’s ownership interest, while Hansjorg Wyss will retain his status as a significant stakeholder.
Chelsea praised Boehly for his “unwavering commitment” to the belief that fans remain at the heart of the club. The statement highlighted collaborative efforts to establish a sustainable foundation for long-term sporting success, citing substantial investments across various areas, including the men’s and women’s teams, training facilities, and academy development.
In addressing the club’s supporters, Boehly described his tenure as an “honour” and expressed gratitude to all involved in securing the club’s future. He stated, “I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.”
Boehly affirmed his belief that the club is “well positioned for continued success,” as he entrusts full control to Clearlake. The transition marks a significant moment in Chelsea’s ongoing evolution as it looks to build on its strategic objectives.
For Chelsea, this marks the end of an era and the start of a new chapter, an invitation to fans and stakeholders to witness how the club navigates its future ambitions amid changing ownership dynamics.
