Xabi Alonso calls for improvement after Chelsea’s draw with Hull City
Xabi Alonso has urged his Chelsea squad to perform “much better” following a 2-2 draw with Hull City at Stamford Bridge, with the manager describing the goals conceded as “soft”, reports BritPanorama.
The match highlighted Chelsea’s defensive frailties, bringing their total goals conceded to nine this season, standing as the third-worst record in the Premier League.
Mohamed Belloumi was the standout performer for Hull, scoring both of his goals during the first half. His first was indicative of Chelsea’s defensive issues, as a misjudged ball left Jorrel Hato exposed, allowing Belloumi to slot home.
Belloumi’s second goal further compounded Chelsea’s problems, capitalising on a corner where Emi Martinez failed to connect properly, with the ball rebounding off the crossbar and falling kindly for him to finish, despite a deflection off Levi Colwill.
After the match, Alonso acknowledged the defensive lapses that have reoccurred and expressed a desire for his team to deliver a more orderly performance. He stated, “Maybe entertaining, but I hope one day you’ll say it was a boring game and we win and we don’t give these entertaining moments.”
Reflecting on the need for improvement, Alonso noted, “When we get the lead, you still need to be competing and not give the chance so easily for them to come back, especially for the first goal. We can do much better. It was too soft.” He went on to stress the importance of addressing these issues as they aim to improve their league position.
Chelsea’s attacking potency remains intact, having scored 18 goals across all competitions this season, with the frontline of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro showcasing significant promise. However, Alonso emphasised a balance is needed, admitting, “Overall, I think that we are attacking better than defending.” He acknowledged the defensive challenges but remains optimistic for future improvements.
As the Blues prepare for their next encounter against Brentford before the international break, they will be seeking to rectify their defensive shortcomings. Hull City, meanwhile, continue their unbeaten start to the season, with manager Sergej Jakirovic lauding the point earned against Chelsea as a “huge result” in a demanding match.
