Jed York receives jail sentence for misdemeanour charges
Leeds United co-owner Jed York has been sentenced to one day in jail after pleading no contest to two misdemeanour charges, reports BritPanorama.
York, who also serves as the principal owner of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, entered no-contest pleas for disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. The charges stemmed from an incident on Sunday morning at a mobile home community in East Palestine, Ohio, where he was arrested.
The disorderly conduct charge was initially filed as engaging in prostitution but was amended under a plea agreement with prosecutors. Authorities claim York used his mobile phone to respond to an undercover online advertisement, which led to the possession charge.
Upon his arrest, York posted a $5,000 bond and appeared in court the following day. He received a one-day sentence for each offence, which will run concurrently, and was given credit for time served, meaning he will not spend additional time in jail.
York was also fined $1,150 and required to complete an online course related to the charges. His phone was returned after the legal proceedings, but $160 seized during the arrest was forfeited to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.
Ohio law allows a no-contest plea to establish guilt based on the facts presented without it being an admission for future civil or criminal proceedings. Columbiana County prosecutor Vito Abruzzino noted that such cases are evaluated based on specific circumstances, including the defendant’s history and the evidence provided by law enforcement.
The NFL is currently reviewing the incident as team owners are subject to its personal conduct policies. A league statement confirmed the ongoing examination, although no announcements regarding potential sanctions have been made yet.
While the sanctions for violations could range from fines to suspensions, York’s short sentence falls below the 12-month custodial threshold that might trigger disqualification under the Premier League’s owners and directors test. The Premier League has not confirmed if it will pursue any action regarding York’s case.
