Major security disruption at European Championships in Birmingham

Amy Hunt and her Great Britain team-mates were caught up in major disruption at the European Championships after armed police descended on Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Saturday night, reports BritPanorama.

The British sprint star had just secured her third gold medal of a sensational championships when the security operation caused significant travel chaos for athletes, coaches, and spectators attempting to leave the venue. Armed officers arrived in numbers during the closing stages of Saturday’s evening session, with West Midlands Police subsequently arresting a man in his thirties on suspicion of fraud.

The incident led to championship transport being suspended while security checks were conducted. Hunt and her victorious women’s 4x100m relay team-mates were among those affected, with their bus reportedly delayed as competitors awaited their return to Birmingham city centre. Some journeys experienced delays of up to two hours, leaving hundreds of athletes, coaches, and supporters facing lengthy waits following the conclusion of the action.

Police conducted searches of buses scheduled to transport those inside the Alexander Stadium away from the venue. The disruption extended beyond transport; six medal ceremonies planned for the stadium were cancelled as organisers responded to the security situation. The man arrested remained in police custody as of Sunday morning.

European Championships organisers confirmed the incident in a statement, stressing that safety had taken priority despite the considerable disruption caused. “Championship transport was suspended until the necessary security measures had been carried out whilst West Midlands Police arrested a man in his thirties on suspicion of fraud,” the statement noted.

The dramatic scenes unfolded at the end of a particularly successful night for Great Britain on the track. Hunt joined Dina Asher-Smith, Success Eduan, and Imani-Lara Lansiquot to comfortably win the women’s 4x100m relay in 42.05 seconds, following victory for Britain’s men’s quartet and marking a strong performance for the host nation.

Despite the chaos that ensued after her latest triumph, Hunt is expected to return to the Alexander Stadium on Sunday, aiming for history with the potential for a fourth title in the inaugural mixed 4x100m relay. If successful, it would make her the first athlete in the 92-year history of the European Championships to claim four gold medals at a single event.

The events of Saturday evening serve as a stark reminder of the balance organisers must maintain between safety and celebration, proving that in sport, triumphs can be inevitably entwined with unexpected turmoil.
