Scheffler leads St Jude Championship after strategic driver change ahead of final round

Scottie Scheffler heads into final round with a two-shot lead at St Jude Championship

Scottie Scheffler has taken a commanding lead as he heads into the final round of the St Jude Championship, currently sitting two shots ahead after delivering impressive performances throughout the tournament, reports BritPanorama.

The world No 1 has demonstrated his prowess across the first three rounds, notably achieving a remarkable nine-under-par 61 on Friday. This display placed him firmly in contention as he entered the weekend.

In preparation for this critical juncture, Scheffler opted to change his driver from the conventional TaylorMade Qi10 to the Qi4D model. This driver switch marks only the third time he has employed the Qi4D in competition since he last used it in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Reflecting on his equipment change earlier this spring, Scheffler stated, “I’ve seen some improvements in the new driver; like my spin is much more consistent. It’s actually a touch faster than my driver.” Despite some variations in shot direction, the American has capitalized on the adjustments he made.

In the third round, Scheffler recorded a steady two-under 68, bringing his total to 13-under-par as he heads into the decisive round. His closest competitor, Sam Burns, trails by two shots following an impressive bogey-free third round of 62.

Defending FedEx Cup champion Tommy Fleetwood is further behind, sitting five shots off the pace. As Scheffler approaches the final round, he remains focused on executing his strategy. “Strategy is still the same; just go out there and execute,” he remarked. He acknowledged the unique dynamics of competing against a friend, noting, “It will be a competition like normal. It will be fun being out there with your friend, but it’s also a bit weird.”

Meanwhile, notable figures such as Sweden’s Alex Noren and Norway’s Viktor Hovland are in contention, while Masters champion Rory McIlroy has struggled to find form, with scores of 74, 70, and 72 through his initial rounds.

As the tournament progresses, Scheffler’s performance not only highlights his adaptability but also serves as a reminder of the tight interplay between equipment and skill at the highest levels of golf.
