Voters heading to the polls this week in Nigel Farage’s by-election in Clacton will have a record number of candidates to choose from – but will not be able to vote for most major parties, reports BritPanorama.
The Reform UK leader announced he was quitting as an MP amid mounting questions over his personal finances. Shortly after, the Labour Party, the Tories, Liberal Democrats, Greens, and Restore Britain declared they would not field candidates in the by-election, leaving independent candidates and Count Binface to contest the vote.
Mr Farage is already under investigation by the Commons standards watchdog concerning an undeclared £5 million gift from Reform donor Christopher Harborne prior to his parliamentary tenure. This follows confirmation he faces another probe related to security arrangements funded by convicted fraudster George Cottrell.
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the government to postpone Mr Farage’s resignation until the ongoing investigation concludes. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch labelled the by-election a “fake” event, asserting it distracts from important matters and should allow the investigation to proceed uninterrupted.
When is the by-election?
The by-election will be held on Thursday, 13 August, with results expected in the early hours of Friday morning. Initial plans by Reform had aimed for a vote on 6 August, but Tendring District Council later announced the updated date.
Acting returning officer Ian Davidson stated, “The electoral timetable is set out by law and so we are bound by these dates,” emphasising the importance of voter registration for those wishing to participate.
Davidson encouraged residents to ensure their ID is valid for polling stations or to apply for the free alternative Voter Authority Certificate, aiming to facilitate as many votes as possible.
Who is actually standing?
Count Binface
This satirical candidate, created by comedian Jonathan David Harvey, previously contested the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency against Boris Johnson in 2019 and again in the 2023 by-election that followed Johnson’s resignation. Count Binface has declared candidacy for the Clacton by-election.
On X, Binface stated, “Labour, Tories, Lib Dems and Greens: I demand you stand down in Clacton. I will be a unity candidate and pledge to build at least one affordable house.”
Laurence Fox
Founded by actor Laurence Fox in 2020, the Reclaim Party seeks to challenge “woke orthodoxy.” Fox intends to stand in the Clacton by-election, claiming, “We respect the voters of Clacton and also to elevate the Fight on the Right.”
Rejoin EU
John Stevens is running for the Rejoin EU Party, which advocates for reversing Brexit and aims to rejoin the EU.
Monster Raving Loony Party
This satirical group, established in 1982, will field three candidates against Mr Farage, with a manifesto that includes whimsical policies such as banning intergalactic interference in UK elections.
Piers Corbyn
Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, announced his candidacy emphasizing the need to address issues not otherwise raised.
Adham Alkhatip
Leader of the Forward Party, Alkhatip seeks to run on an “anti-corruption, pro-worker” platform.
Alongside them, several independent candidates will emerge, including those focusing on local issues such as safer streets and improved public services. Notable mentions include:
- Joseph 77 (Tom Darwood): Running solely through song and verse.
- Andy Erlam: Promising community engagement if elected.
- William Stuart James Clouston: Aiming to provide a credible alternative to Reform.
- Abi Hookway: Campaigning to back small business owners.
The extensive range of candidates in Clacton reflects the current political landscape, marked by tensions and shifts in traditional party structures. As the by-election approaches, voter engagement may prove critical in determining the outcome.
In an environment of unprecedented competition, the dynamics reveal both the volatility of political allegiances and the unique challenges facing constituents in Clacton.
