Millions of UK Netflix subscribers gearing up to watch WWE SummerSlam 2026 live this weekend could unwittingly be breaking the law — and face penalties of up to £1,000, reports BritPanorama.
The flagship wrestling spectacular will unfold over two nights at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and will be streamed live as part of Netflix’s expansive agreement with WWE. However, many British viewers may be unaware that tuning in without a valid TV Licence constitutes an offence.
The rule often catches people by surprise. Generally, most Netflix content is on-demand and requires no licence. Yet, because SummerSlam is a live broadcast, it falls under a different legal category. Those found in breach risk prosecution, making it crucial for viewers to understand the regulations.
TV Licensing regulations state that any programme viewed or recorded at the moment of broadcast requires a licence, regardless of the platform. This obligation extends across all devices, including smart TVs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Live television is treated identically whether it appears on traditional channels or streaming services.
While the majority of Netflix’s library is exempt from this requirement, live events such as SummerSlam do not enjoy that distinction. A colour TV Licence currently costs £180 annually, with a black-and-white option available for £60.50—a price increase that took effect on 1 April 2026.
A spokesperson for TV Licensing noted, “A TV Licence is needed to watch live content on streaming services, watch or record a TV programme on any channel and when using BBC iPlayer. The implications of non-compliance are severe, with penalties reaching a maximum of £1,000, alongside potential legal costs and compensation. In Guernsey, fines can escalate to £2,000.

CM Punk will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes, while Roman Reigns takes on Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship in a renewed rivalry.
