Georgina Rodriguez offers support to Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal's World Cup exit

Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey ends in heartbreak

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of lifting the World Cup has come to a heartbreaking end as Portugal was eliminated from the tournament following a 1-0 defeat to Spain on October 17, 2025. Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time goal secured Spain’s place in the quarter-finals, bringing an abrupt conclusion to Ronaldo’s World Cup aspirations, reports BritPanorama.

The defeat confirmed that the 41-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, will retire from the competition without ever winning the sport’s biggest prize. After the final whistle, Ronaldo visibly struggled to contain his emotions, leaving the pitch in tears as the reality of this final World Cup appearance sunk in.

Hours later, his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez publicly supported him with a poignant social media tribute. The model and influencer, who boasts over 74 million followers on Instagram, shared an image featuring a profile photograph of the Portugal captain alongside the words: “His Legend Lives On.”

Rodriguez complemented the post with a single red heart emoji, signifying her support as Ronaldo grappled with the disappointment of one of the most painful moments of his career. Before the match against Spain, he had acknowledged it would be his last World Cup in North America, hoping to extend his farewell but ultimately falling short.

In a post-match interview, Ronaldo confirmed his exit from international football, stating, “It’s been my last World Cup, yes – but now I will have time to think, stay with my family and life continues.” Despite not clinching the World Cup, he expressed pride in his achievements, having led Portugal to their first major trophy at Euro 2016 and winning UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo reflected on his career, saying, “I will wake up tomorrow with a clear conscience, because I gave my all,” adding that his biggest title with Portugal remains Euro 2016, which he views as equally significant as the World Cup. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner ends his remarkable international career with a host of records, including being the first player to score at six separate World Cups, but the elusive World Cup trophy will forever elude him.

As Ronaldo walked away from the field, he cut a solitary figure, reminiscent of his emotional exit in 2022, after a defeat to Morocco. This time, he managed to compose himself, yet the unmistakable disappointment lingered as he departed with his head lowered.

Ronaldo’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the weight of legacy in football, a sport where the brightest stars can leave the arena without its highest accolade lingering in their grasp.
