Belgium denounces FIFA's decision to lift Folarin Balogun's suspension ahead of World Cup clash

Belgium protests after FIFA clears Balogun for knockout clash

Belgium have released a furious statement after FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban, clearing the USA striker to face them in Monday’s World Cup last-16 clash, reports BritPanorama.

The decision has ignited a significant dispute on the eve of the knockout match in Seattle. The Belgian FA described FIFA’s ruling as “astonishing,” asserting that it contradicts the governing body’s own competition regulations.

Balogun was initially expected to miss the match after being sent off during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier in the tournament. However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the 25-year-old’s suspension would be put on hold for a one-year probationary period, allowing him to be selected against Belgium.

The ruling was welcomed in the United States, with President Donald Trump writing on Truth Social: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice!” The United States Men’s National Team echoed this sentiment, stating, “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow.”

In stark contrast, Belgium’s anger was palpable. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed its astonishment at FIFA’s decision, noting that it allows a suspended player to participate in the imminent match. “This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction,” the RBFA’s statement read.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that a red card automatically results in a suspension for the next match, as specified in Article 66.4 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The RBFA emphasized that this interpretation had been upheld in FIFA circulars and tournaments previously.

To safeguard fair play, the Belgian FA is “investigating all potential options.” Their president, Pascale Van Damme, who also serves on the FIFA Council, travelled to Seattle amid escalating discussions regarding the decision. FIFA has yet to respond to Belgium’s criticism.

Balogun received his red card following a challenge on the Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic, a decision he claims was accidental. “First and foremost, it was totally unintentional,” Balogun explained, reiterating that his aim was not malicious.

The news of Balogun’s eligibility was initially relayed to USA players through social media, prompting some initial uncertainty within the squad. Defender Chris Richards remarked, “We weren’t quite sure if it was true or not,” reflecting the chaotic nature of communication leading up to such a pivotal match.

As the players prepare for what promises to be a heated encounter, the backdrop of controversy adds another layer to an already high-stakes knockout scenario. This clash will not only test the mettle of both teams but also serve as a reminder of how the rules of the game can spark division off the pitch as much as unity on it.
