Christian Horner poised for return to Formula One at Silverstone
Christian Horner is set to make his first appearance in the Formula One paddock since his dramatic departure from Red Bull, with the former team principal expected to attend this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, reports BritPanorama.
The 52-year-old has largely stayed away from the sport since leaving Red Bull following last year’s British Grand Prix, ending a hugely successful two-decade spell with the Milton Keynes outfit. He was relieved of his duties just 48 hours after the 2025 race at Silverstone amid a power struggle within Red Bull’s ownership, bringing one of Formula One’s most successful partnerships to an abrupt conclusion.
As part of his departure, Horner reportedly received an £80 million severance package and has been free to return to the sport since March. Although he has spent much of the past year enjoying family life with wife Geri Halliwell-Horner and taking a break from the relentless Formula One schedule, the Briton has repeatedly indicated he still has ambitions to return to the sport. Now, that comeback appears to be moving a step closer.
According to reports, Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem have invited Horner to attend this weekend’s race as their guest. Several opportunities are believed to be under consideration, including potential positions at Aston Martin and Ferrari. Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll remains a long-time admirer of Horner and has renewed his interest in appointing the experienced team boss in recent weeks.
Horner established himself as one of Formula One’s most successful principals during his 20 years at Red Bull, overseeing eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles through Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. However, he is also believed to be exploring options beyond simply joining an existing team.
The former Red Bull chief is reported to favour acquiring an ownership stake in a Formula One outfit, with backing from major investors should the right opportunity arise. One possibility is purchasing the 24 per cent shareholding in Alpine currently owned by private equity firm Otro. Another long-term ambition involves launching an entirely new Formula One team, although that project would likely delay his return to the grid by several years. Horner has reportedly held preliminary discussions with Chinese automotive giant BYD about the possibility, though those talks are understood to remain at an early stage.
For now, all eyes will be on Silverstone, where Horner’s expected return to the paddock is set to provide one of the weekend’s biggest talking points as speculation over his Formula One future continues to gather pace.
