John Terry expresses concern over Thomas Tuchel’s treatment of Djed Spence
John Terry has acknowledged his “worry” regarding Thomas Tuchel’s treatment of Djed Spence, alleging that the England manager has repeatedly singled out the Tottenham full-back during the World Cup, reports BritPanorama.
Spence has participated in all four of England’s matches in the tournament, starting against Ghana and DR Congo, yet has often been subjected to Tuchel’s vocal touchline criticisms. This was notably evident during England’s recent victory over DR Congo, when Tuchel was captured on camera visibly frustrated with one of Spence’s throw-ins.
Terry suggested that such public reprimands could send conflicting messages, especially given that Tuchel has consistently selected the 25-year-old while openly expressing his dissatisfaction. Terry also raised concerns about Tuchel’s decisions to omit established players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, and Phil Foden from his squad, hinting that his choices may reflect the personalities he feels comfortable managing.
Defending his squad choices, Tuchel has expressed that maintaining harmony within the team is a crucial factor in his selections. In an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Terry elaborated on his unease regarding Tuchel’s treatment of Spence. “I don’t know if you’ve seen the images and the videos of him going mad at Spence again… I’m a little bit worried,” Terry commented, contrasting Tuchel’s approach to Spence with how he might treat higher-profile players.
While Terry described himself as not being a fan of Spence’s abilities, he insisted that what troubled him were the inconsistencies in Tuchel’s behaviour. “It just seems to be on two or three occasions he’s dug Spence out,” Terry noted, questioning Tuchel’s method and expressing concern about the message it conveys to younger players.
Tuchel’s emotional nature on the touchline has often been on display throughout the tournament, including incidents where he has reacted strongly to players’ performances, such as throwing a water bottle in response to DR Congo’s early goal and publically reprimanding Jordan Pickford over his distribution issues. Despite these controversies, Tuchel has successfully guided England into the last 16, with hopes of progressing further in their World Cup campaign.
In the ever-complex interplay of leadership and team dynamics, the delicate balancing act between critical coaching and nurturing player confidence remains crucial. As England advances, how Tuchel manages player relationships could define not just individual careers, but potentially the trajectory of the team’s aspirations on football’s grandest stage.
