Iran prepares for funeral of former Supreme Leader Khamenei

The funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is set to proceed this weekend, providing a platform for supporters of his legacy to demonstrate their strength, reports BritPanorama. The event aims to project the Islamic Republic’s enduring power and resilience against external pressures.

Sina Azodi, director of the Middle East studies program at George Washington University, noted that the regime intends to highlight public loyalty to the Islamic Republic during the ceremonies. “They would like to portray it as a signal of the Islamic Republic’s strength, ability to resist outside pressure, resilience,” she stated. The authorities plan to mobilize supporters to demonstrate large-scale attendance.

Viewing events will take place at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a formal funeral procession through the city on Monday. Additional ceremonies are scheduled in Qom, a major center of religious authority, and in Iraq, where significant Shiite shrines exist. This approach allows the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to showcase its regional influence.

Khamenei will be interred in Mashhad, his birthplace and home to the foremost Shiite holy site in Iran, on Thursday. The timing of the funeral, nearly four months posthumously, stands out against Islamic tradition that typically dictates swift burial. Recently, the U.S. and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at achieving a ceasefire, setting a complex backdrop for such ceremonies.

The funeral date was only confirmed recently, and waves of tension still ripple following violent U.S. and Israeli offensives that claimed the lives of numerous senior Iranian officials in the preceding months. As political uncertainty remains, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, who was also injured during the incident that resulted in his father’s death, took on the supreme leader role in March. However, his health and public appearances are cause for speculation.

The portrayal of Khamenei as a martyr persists in state media and through nationalistic murals in Tehran, reflecting his longstanding influence. His leadership fostered the economic and military might of the IRGC, whose ascendancy has heightened amidst ongoing conflicts. Analysts suggest that U.S. and Israeli efforts to destabilize the regime may inadvertently empower more hardline factions within Iran.

“The IRGC dominates strategic decision-making and the allocation of national resources,” stated Ali Alfoneh, a senior fellow at the Arab Gulf States Institute, shedding light on the organization’s increasing assertiveness.

Among the rising figures within this power dynamic is Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the current speaker of parliament and chief negotiator in discussions with the U.S., known for his provocative remarks directed at foreign leaders. In a recent statement, he expressed the urgency of calling for action in response to perceived aggressions, illustrating the charged atmosphere surrounding Khamenei’s death.

The Iranian political landscape remains marked by the legacy of Khamenei, with imminent implications for domestic stability and regional dynamics as the country navigates its future amidst ongoing conflicts.
