Ivan Toney’s “clear the air” talks with Thomas Tuchel before World Cup clash

England star Ivan Toney has revealed he held “clear the air” talks with Thomas Tuchel before the Three Lions’ World Cup clash with Panama, reports BritPanorama.

The striker, who made a surprise return to Tuchel’s squad for the tournament in North America after nearly a year away from the England setup, had not been selected since the June internationals earlier in 2025. During that time, Tuchel publicly raised concerns about Toney’s “level of training and level of commitment.”

Despite this setback, the Al-Ahli forward, who has scored 72 goals over the previous two seasons, stated that he believes Tuchel now has a better understanding of his character and contributions to the team.

Although Toney has yet to feature in the World Cup, he could see action against Panama in New York as Tuchel considers alterations for England’s last Group L fixture. The 30-year-old acknowledged that he may need to come off the bench, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining a positive atmosphere within the squad. “I know I’m not going to play every game; not going to get a lot of minutes, but I’ll still be training well, smiling,” Toney said.

“I’m sure there are some players in other camps that might be a bit moody and bring the mood down,” he added. Toney recognized that there might have been past misunderstandings with Tuchel, but insisted those issues have been resolved: “Maybe miscommunication played a part and that’s why we cleared the air. We’re on the same path now and things are sorted.”

Tuchel has made his expectations clear to all players regarding their roles in the squad during this tournament. For Toney, this clarity has facilitated the management of his expectations, even as he remains eager to contribute on the pitch. “It’s better because going into a tournament not knowing where you stand is going to be frustrating,” he noted.

Toney reflected on his earlier career, recalling his time at Peterborough United when he had to wait for his chance to prove himself: “I waited for my chance and managed to take it and thankfully scored a good amount of goals.” He remains ready to seize any opportunity he gets during the tournament, ready to do what he does best — score goals and assist the team.

In an increasingly competitive environment, Toney’s journey underscores the delicate balance of morale and performance that defines team dynamics at this level. What remains fascinating is how quickly narratives can shift within the crucible of international sport.
