Power outage halts Wimbledon qualifying as electronic system fails

Wimbledon qualifying hit by power failure

Wimbledon qualifying was temporarily halted on Wednesday afternoon due to a power failure that disabled the electronic line-calling system at the Roehampton venue, reports BritPanorama.

Matches at the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Tennis Centre came to a standstill at 12.15pm, with players waiting for over an hour before returning to court as organisers addressed the issue. The event was already under an extreme heat weather warning, with officials prioritising the well-being of competitors and spectators amidst the soaring temperatures.

While the unusually high temperatures are believed to have contributed to the outage, a thorough investigation will follow, according to tournament officials. A spokesman for the All England Club confirmed that power had been restored and play subsequently resumed.

Dan Evans, a veteran British player looking to conclude his Wimbledon journey on a high note, faced disruption during this delay. He succumbed to Tristan Schoolkate, the 28th seed in qualifying, in a straight-sets defeat, 7-5, 6-0, thwarting his ambitions of making a final appearance at the grass-court Grand Slam through the qualifying route.

Following his victory, Schoolkate acknowledged Evans’s contributions to tennis, remarking: “Dan is a phenomenal player and I wish him all the best for after his career.” He expressed his admiration for Evans, noting how many young players could learn from his competitive spirit and unique playing style.

Commenting on the conditions during the match, Schoolkate reflected: “It is not usually this hot in London, so it was unexpected.” He suggested the power issues might have stemmed from electronic malfunctions rather than purely the heat, but appreciated the brief intermission as a moment to regroup.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges that can arise in professional sports, where even the most seasoned athletes must adapt to unforeseen circumstances. In the world of tennis, where precision and focus are paramount, external factors can abruptly alter the course of matches and careers.
