Wimbledon announces new pop-up venue in New York
Wimbledon has revealed plans for a temporary venue in New York City, marking an expansion of its global reach, reports BritPanorama.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club will construct a pop-up court at Central Park’s Wollman Rink, located in the heart of Manhattan. This installation is set to welcome visitors from June 26 to 29, aligning with the commencement of The Championships at SW19.
This announcement represents the fifth consecutive year Wimbledon has introduced its unique tennis atmosphere to American audiences. Visitors will have the chance to engage with the grass court firsthand, experiencing the distinctive playing surface that characterizes The Championships.
To participate in the playing sessions, individuals must enter a ballot before the deadline on June 10. Usama Al-Qassab, Marketing and Commercial Director at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating: “We are delighted to bring Wimbledon to the US for a fifth successive year, giving New York’s devoted tennis fans a flavour of Wimbledon.”
The principal tournament at SW19 is scheduled from June 29 to July 12. However, Wimbledon will proceed without star player Carlos Alcaraz, who has withdrawn due to a persistent wrist injury, having missed the French Open and other competitions. The 23-year-old announced his decision via social media, highlighting the ongoing challenges of his recovery following an earlier injury sustained at the Barcelona Open this season.
The absence of Alcaraz from the grass court season is a notable development, marking a significant loss for the event, as he was expected to defend his Wimbledon title. Alcaraz’s rehabilitation has not progressed as hoped, prompting his withdrawal and denying him the opportunity to maintain his status among the elite players in the sport.
As the excitement builds for Wimbledon, the introduction of a pop-up venue in New York underscores the tournament’s adaptive spirit, seamlessly blending tradition with modern engagement. The court in Central Park will provide a unique backdrop for tennis enthusiasts, allowing them to connect with the celebrated tournament in an innovative setting.
