Record number of migrants cross the Channel in single boat
A record number of migrants have crossed the Channel in a single boat, with around 230 individuals reportedly arriving in Dover early this morning, reports BritPanorama.
The incident marks the largest number of migrants to successfully traverse the Channel in one vessel, according to Sky News. The boat, referred to as a “mega dinghy,” was observed arriving in the early hours of the morning.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage reacted strongly to the news via social media, characterising the situation as evidence of a “national security emergency.” He stated: “At 2.30am this morning a boat carrying 230 people was taken into Dover. This is a record number in a single vessel. It’s yet more proof that this illegal invasion is a national security emergency.”
The previous record for the largest number of migrants on a single boat was 165, set just last month. In recent weeks, people smugglers have increasingly crowded boats with migrants, raising concerns about safety. Earlier this month, another overcrowded dinghy carrying 173 people capsized in the English Channel after experiencing engine failure.
A spokesperson for the Home Office remarked on the dangers posed by the tactics of criminal gangs facilitating these crossings, putting countless lives at risk. Although they noted a decrease in small boat crossings this year, with July witnessing the lowest number since 2020, the government aims to address the ongoing issue more effectively. They have announced a payment-by-results agreement with the French government to bolster enforcement along the French coastline.
Recent visuals highlighted the plight of vulnerable individuals involved in these crossings, including a months-old baby seen being taken aboard a packed dinghy in France yesterday. Eyewitnesses reported observing multiple young children being assisted onto the boat, even as authorities were present and allegedly threatened photographers documenting the events.
The French authorities had been tracking the vessel for more than nine hours, reportedly monitoring its progress along the coast. It was allowed to continue its journey, raising questions about the enforcement of laws against people smuggling and the involvement of authorities during these perilous crossings.
While the presence of a coastguard vessel followed the dinghy, it remained focused solely on its potential sinking. Reports indicate the boat stopped at Berck beach and then continued to Camiers beach, having covered a distance of approximately 52 miles from launch.
