Calls for Ireland to boycott clash against Israel
Campaign group Stop The Game has called on Ireland to boycott their second game against Israel, as the two nations are set to meet again in Serbia on October 4 amid ongoing unrest among supporters, reports BritPanorama.
Previously, Ireland faced Israel over the weekend, securing a 3-0 victory while substitute goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu chose to boycott the match. Bazunu expressed his stance against playing Israel, stating that his “decision is based purely on my personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong.”
Last week, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed the upcoming game against Israel, prompting Stop The Game to urge a reassessment of their decision through an open letter. The letter acknowledged Bazunu’s actions as commendable and a significant humanitarian stance, calling for the team’s solidarity with the Irish public’s sentiment.
The letter noted, “We want to begin by acknowledging Gavin Bazunu. His decision not to be available for these fixtures was an act of immense personal courage. It has received admiration around the world.” It also highlighted that over 70% of the Irish public believes the matches should not proceed, emphasizing that players represent the views of the nation.
The advocacy group urged players to reconsider their participation, noting, “Every credible national poll on this issue has found that over 70 per cent of the Irish public believe these matches should not take place.” They encouraged those under pressure from the FAI to express their opposition to the matches.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has called for the focus to shift back to football amid planned protests, asserting, “I am not going to allow outside noise to affect me focusing on football. I must give those thoughts to others that care of security.”
Hallgrimsson confirmed the team’s intention to fulfil the scheduled fixtures despite the ongoing debate, stating that they would face Israel as originally planned. As the players prepare for the upcoming match, the tension surrounding the fixture remains, highlighting the complex intersection of sport and humanitarian issues.
