Western Europe records unprecedented heat wave
The extreme heat wave affecting Western Europe this summer has resulted in average temperatures that surpass the previous record for the June-July period set in 2022, according to the European climate agency Copernicus, reports BritPanorama.
Beginning in May, the severe heat has sparked significant wildfires, prolonged drought conditions, and new national temperature records across the region, contributing to thousands of forecasted heat-related fatalities.
With 2025 measuring as the third hottest year globally so far—following 2024—the current climate statistics indicate that 2026 may have the potential to exceed these temperatures, particularly due to a combination of intensified human-induced global warming and a robust El Niño event.
Scientists warn that the ongoing El Niño, which typically causes global temperature fluctuations, could push 2026 to become the hottest year on record, potentially surpassing 2024.
In July alone, average sea surface temperatures across non-polar oceans reached 20.96 degrees Celsius (69.73 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking the previous record of 20.89 C (69.60 F) set in 2023. However, the average surface air temperature globally was recorded at 16.90°C (62.42 F), making it only the joint second warmest July on record, tied with July 2024.
In Western Europe, the June-July average climbed to 21.62°C (70.92 F), as highlighted by Copernicus. “Persistent high-pressure systems trapped heat over western Europe, with the extreme temperatures also amplifying widespread drought,” explained Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build more readily.”
Burgess further noted, “This is a clear example of how climate change is intensifying heat extremes, with heat and drought increasingly reinforcing one another.”
