Anthony Gordon takes swipe at Newcastle during Barcelona unveiling
Anthony Gordon, unveiled as a Barcelona player, remarked on his previous club Newcastle United, stating he had already begun learning Spanish and told a club physio, “One day I will play for Barca,” reports BritPanorama.
The English forward completed a transfer to the Spanish giants worth £69.3 million, plus add-ons, having undertaken a medical in Spain. In his unveiling, Gordon subtly implied that Newcastle was merely a stepping-stone in his career.
He expressed that he had a physio at Newcastle with whom he spoke regularly, sharing his aspiration of playing for Barcelona. Reflecting on Newcastle’s recent clash with Barcelona in the Champions League, he noted that “we could not touch the ball” during the match, which the Magpies lost heavily.
Gordon described training alongside players like Lamine Yamal as a thrilling opportunity, stating, “the more players with quality around you, the better you are going to be.” His comments also reflected a clear admiration for Barcelona’s roster, emphasizing their world-class abilities.
Having signed a contract that extends until 2031, Gordon departs Newcastle where he was the club’s leading scorer last season, netting 17 goals. He joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 for around £40 million and quickly became a vital presence on the left flank for Newcastle.
Earlier in the unveiling, Gordon stated, “As soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was never any question. I always wanted Barca. Barca is the biggest club on the planet.” He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility he assumes, noting he is ready for this new challenge.
Throughout his transition, Gordon maintained recognition of the players who wore the Barcelona shirt before him, attributing great significance to the number he will wear. His journey reflects a broader ambition, illustrating how football careers can pivot dramatically in pursuit of greater aspirations.
