Matt Le Tissier criticizes Southampton’s expulsion from playoffs
Matt Le Tissier has branded Southampton’s expulsion from the play-offs as “too severe,” calling for Hull City to advance automatically, reports BritPanorama.
The Saints were expelled following the ‘spygate’ affair, after an Independent Disciplinary Commission delivered its verdict. Le Tissier feels the punishment handed to Southampton by the EFL has gone too far.
He stated, “The EFL’s announcement was a little bit of a shock; I didn’t think the punishment would be that severe for the crime that was committed.” Le Tissier expressed that while he acknowledges the need for punishment, he believes the response was excessively harsh: “It feels like they’ve used a sledgehammer to crack a nut.”
Le Tissier described the penalty imposed on the Saints as “the biggest sporting sanction that has ever been imposed on a football club,” citing the potential financial ramifications of around £215 million. “I know there’s a 50/50 chance if you win the game, with the final still to be played,” he continued, adding that it effectively means a £107.5 million fine along with a four-point deduction.
He remarked that clubs have faced relegation for serious financial irregularities, yet the incident at hand concerns “marginal gains.” Le Tissier noted, “We didn’t win any of those three games, so any information that we got obviously didn’t make any difference to the results.” Insisting that Southampton’s club had fully cooperated with the investigation, he termed the penalty a “really harsh” reaction.
Following the punishment, the Saints legend called for Hull City to be promoted, saying, “If the EFL are expelling us, I think probably Hull should go up.” He argued that it would have been fairer considering that “Middlesbrough haven’t deserved to be in the final.” However, he acknowledged the economic considerations of the EFL in such decisions.
Middlesbrough are set to play Hull City at Wembley on May 23, with an earlier kick-off time of 3:30pm. While Le Tissier expressed some confidence in Middlesbrough’s abilities, he suggested that “Hull have got a puncher’s chance,” making it a very competitive match-up. His observation reflects a broader sentiment in football: how uncertainty and tightly contested matches often lead to unexpected outcomes.
