Norwich City faces antisemitism controversy over supporter comments

Norwich City is in the midst of an antisemitism controversy following comments made by a member of its supporter panel, who urged the club to avoid signing Israeli footballers. Jessica Pye’s statements, particularly concerning speculation about a potential move for Israeli international winger Liel Abada, have incited widespread backlash, reports BritPanorama.

Pye, 24, currently with Charlotte FC in the United States under former Norwich manager Dean Smith, was responding to interest in Abada from both Norwich City and Birmingham City. On social media platform X, she called for a blanket ban on players from Israel, stating, “You wouldn’t sign a Russian, so why sign an Israeli?” and further demanding, “Ban Israel. No Israeli signings.”

Her comments included accusations of “war crimes” and “genocide” directed at Israel, prompting the charity Campaign Against Antisemitism to label her remarks as a “drip drip of hatred.” The organization has called for Pye’s removal from the club’s inclusivity panel, emphasizing the need to address such attitudes within cultural institutions.

In response to the uproar, a spokesperson for the charity stated that such rhetoric is precisely what the UK Prime Minister recently addressed, calling for society-wide action against antisemitism. Fellow Norwich supporters echoed the condemnation, suggesting that individuals should not bear the weight of their governments’ actions.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of rising antisemitism in the UK, a topic highlighted by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who described it as a “crisis for all of us” following recent violent incidents involving the Jewish community. On this note, Norwich City announced that Pye has resigned from the supporter group amidst the fallout.

Despite stepping back from her official role, Pye continued to engage with the issue on social media, arguing that concerns regarding antisemitism are merely an “entirely constructed moral panic” propagated by “the Zionist lobby.” Previously recognized as a matchday “community hero” by Norwich City for her campaigning for trans rights, this incident has placed her in a contentious spotlight.

Meanwhile, Abada has experienced challenges during his career, having departed Celtic in 2024 after facing abuse from some supporters regarding the conflict in Gaza. While still seeking his first goal this season in Major League Soccer, he has contributed two assists from eight matches so far this year.

This unfolding situation highlights how quickly the intersection of sport and political sentiments can ignite passionate reactions, ultimately leaving football clubs navigating the complexities of public discourse while remaining committed to inclusivity.
