Protests in Jharkhand escalate as police use force against youth demonstrators
Police in eastern India utilized tear gas, batons, and water cannons to disperse thousands of youth protesters as they approached the state legislature in Jharkhand on Monday, reports BritPanorama.
The protests, significantly gathered momentum last month, arise from allegations of corruption in civil service examinations, including reports of recruitment test paper leaks. Students and unemployed youth in Jharkhand, known for its high poverty rates, have been vocal in their frustrations.
This demonstration is part of broader youth-led protests that began in Delhi, linked to similar grievances over examination integrity, which contributed to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month. Approximately 50,000 demonstrators clashed with police in Delhi as they voiced their anger over systemic corruption in education.
Protesters in Jharkhand demand a comprehensive reform of the state’s examination system, including the cancellation of certain tests and a federal police investigation into the alleged irregularities. The initial protests commenced on July 25 and gained significant traction following a mass gathering at a stadium in Ranchi.
On Monday, protesters marched on the state legislature, overcoming police barricades while carrying placards, waving the national flag, and chanting slogans amid heightened security measures. Some individuals attempted to breach barricades, leading to confrontations with law enforcement, who responded with crowd control measures.
Authorities reported that police only resorted to mild force due to some protesters’ violent actions. “We showed minimal aggression for a really short time because they are just students,” Ranchi city police chief Paras Rana stated, urging demonstrators to maintain peace. “Your demands are reaching the government; do not show aggression.”
The state government, under the control of a regional party in opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has engaged in dialogue with the protesters. Officials indicated that most of the demonstrators’ demands have been acknowledged, expressing readiness for further negotiations.
The situation reflects the growing discontent among Indian youth over issues of educational access and integrity, alongside a broader concern about opportunities within a challenging economic landscape.
