North Korea fires ballistic missiles amid rising tensions

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea on Monday fired multiple ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters, South Korea’s military said, adding to a recent streak of weapons demonstrations that has heightened tensions during a prolonged freeze in diplomacy, reports BritPanorama.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the missiles were launched from an area around the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, where the country has increasingly used its airport as a key launch site in recent years. While the joint chiefs did not immediately specify the number of missiles fired or their flight distance, Japan’s Defense Ministry confirmed the detection of at least two missiles, which landed in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The missile launch occurred shortly after South Korea tested its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon on Friday, designed to fly at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound and evade missile defense systems. President Lee Jae Myung described this development as a significant step toward enhancing South Korea’s conventional defense capabilities.

North Korea has ramped up its weapons testing while maintaining a firm stance toward Seoul. This includes an Oct. 3 test of a hypersonic intermediate-range missile purportedly designed to circumvent missile defenses in South Korea and Japan. Furthermore, the regime has executed other missile tests and live-fire drills and has commissioned a new warship, all amid Kim Jong Un’s continued emphasis on expanding his nuclear arsenal while rebuffing U.S. and South Korean overtures to resume stalled diplomatic efforts.

Relations have further deteriorated following land mine explosions that injured three South Korean soldiers near the heavily fortified inter-Korean border last month. The South’s military, along with the U.S.-led United Nations Command, determined that North Korean devices caused the blasts, a claim North Korea has denied while mocking calls for an apology from the South.

In recent years, Kim has halted all diplomatic engagement and cooperation with South Korea, designating the neighbor as a permanent adversary amid a protracted impasse in larger nuclear negotiations with the U.S. He has rejected calls to revive crucial diplomatic talks, first initiated under President Donald Trump, insisting that Washington address its “hostile” policies and relinquish demands for North Korea’s denuclearization as a precondition for dialogue.

These developments represent a setback for President Lee, who has favored engagement with North Korea and moderated his rhetoric toward it, even as public frustration grows regarding last month’s incidents. Lee has also advocated for bolstering South Korea’s defense capabilities while reducing reliance on the United States, which chose to scale back a major military exercise with South Korea in August, claiming his “very good relationship” with Kim as a rationale.

The situation remains precarious, with risks escalating on both sides of the Korean divide.
