Burnham asserts clear evidence of Russian interference in Brexit referendum

UK Prime Minister acknowledges Russian interference in Brexit vote

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that it is clear Russia interfered with Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, adding it is essential to document Moscow’s tampering as countries across Europe face the same threat, reports BritPanorama.

In excerpts from “The Rest is Politics” podcast released Sunday, Burnham revealed that upon becoming Prime Minister in July, he inquired with his advisers regarding potential Russian interference in the 2016 referendum. The complete podcast is set to be available on Monday.

“I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was,” Burnham stated. “These things are important now to put clearly on the record and I believe help voters in Germany and France understand that some of this politics is instigated via our enemies, namely Russia.”

Russia has consistently denied any involvement in other countries’ elections or referendums.

Burnham’s remarks coincide with warnings from UK intelligence agencies about the escalating threat of Russian interference in Britain’s democratic institutions. His acknowledgment marks a significant moment, as this is the first time a British Prime Minister has publicly recognised Russian interference in the Brexit vote.

Furthermore, Burnham discussed with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz potential connections between Russia and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party during their meeting last week in Berlin. “You know he was saying to me that the AfD are clearly linked to Russia, funded I believe,” Burnham noted. “There is certainly misinformation, disinformation that is emanating from Russia into German politics,” he added.

In 2020, Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee found that the government failed to adequately assess the impact of Russian state-run media and “troll” accounts on the EU referendum.

The situation underscores the complex dynamics of foreign interference in democratic processes, raising ongoing concerns regarding national security and election integrity.
