The European Union is increasingly viewing Ukraine not merely as a recipient of aid but as a strategic technology partner capable of contributing vital expertise to joint projects in cybersecurity, defense, and digital transformation. In a recent interview with UNIAN, European Commission Vice President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen emphasized that Ukraine’s experience under wartime conditions has become a cornerstone for Europe’s digital resilience.
Ukrainian expertise bolsters European cybersecurity
Ukraine’s extensive experience in countering cyberattacks during the war has proven indispensable for the EU’s efforts to strengthen its own cybersecurity systems. Ukrainian specialists and technologies are now integrated into joint EU cyber projects designed to counter Russian digital aggression. This collaboration is also paving the way for Ukraine’s inclusion in the “EU Cybersecurity Reserve,” enabling faster and coordinated responses to emerging threats.
Innovative defense technologies and rapid innovation cycles
Ukrainian technological innovations in drone defense, robotics, and electronic warfare—tested in combat—are being incorporated into European defense initiatives such as BraveTech EU. Through these joint projects, the EU gains access to Ukraine’s rapid innovation cycle, boosting development across Europe’s broader defense and technology ecosystem. This cooperation underscores Ukraine’s growing role as a key contributor to the continent’s security architecture.
Reducing dependence and strengthening digital integration
Cooperation with Ukraine helps the EU reduce reliance on third countries, including the United States and China, in strategic sectors such as cloud systems and digital infrastructure. The creation of interoperable EU–Ukraine digital networks is expanding Europe’s overall digital resilience and reinforcing security frameworks across member states. Ukrainian input is also shaping EU-wide standards for digital safety, services, and governance—making them stronger and more adaptable to modern threats.
Partnership as an investment in Europe’s future
The EU–Ukraine partnership in technology, defense, and cybersecurity is not an act of charity but a forward-looking investment in Europe’s own safety, innovation, and digital sovereignty. As Virkkunen noted, this cooperation creates synergy within the defense industry: while the EU gains new production bases, Ukraine accesses new markets. Strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities ultimately translates into greater stability and reduced risks for Europe as a whole.
