Bus collision in Kenya leaves 22 dead
MAKUENI, Kenya — A bus collided with a truck on Kenya’s main highway on Sunday, killing at least 22 people, police said, reports BritPanorama.
The crash occurred just three weeks after 17 individuals died in a separate incident along the same highway that connects the capital, Nairobi, with the coastal city of Mombasa.
Of the injured, around 24 have been admitted to local hospitals, with many receiving treatment at Mtito Andei hospital, according to Paul Kisienya, the medical superintendent at the facility.
Passengers on the bus were reportedly returning to Mombasa after attending the funeral of their church pastor in western Kenya when the accident took place.
Violet Mwandonyi, a mother of two, recounted the moment the bus left Mtito Andei town, where the group had stopped for breakfast. “I cannot recall what exactly happened. The last thing I remember is that we were all wailing and calling on motorists to come to our rescue. I don’t know the fate of my two children who were on the bus,” she stated.
The exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain uncertain, but passenger Spenza Mudave claimed that a truck struck the bus from behind, causing it to roll over.
The National Transport Safety Authority suggested that this incident might involve “improper overtaking,” based on preliminary information indicating a head-on collision.
Speeding and poor road conditions have been recurrent issues implicated in road accidents across Kenya, underscoring persistent concerns regarding highway safety in the region.
