Royal Lytham & St Annes to host 2028 Open Championship

Donald Trump’s Turnberry Golf Club will not host the 2028 Open Championship, as Royal Lytham & St Annes has been awarded the prestigious event, reports BritPanorama.

Scheduled for August 3-6, 2028, the Open will return to the Lancashire course for the first time in 16 years, following Ernie Els’ victory there in 2012. The tournament’s shift to August is intended to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Trump’s Turnberry has sought inclusion in The Open rotation for several years but remains excluded due to logistical challenges. Muirfield has an even longer wait, with the East Lothian club unlikely to host until at least 2031, having last staged the championship in 2013 when Phil Mickelson triumphed.

Mark Darbon, chief executive of The R&A, praised Royal Lytham & St Annes, calling it “one of the world’s finest links courses.” He highlighted its long history with The Open, which began in 1926 with Bobby Jones’ win. Tim Walker, chairman of the council at the club, expressed pride in being chosen to host the upcoming championship.

“We are honoured to be chosen as the host venue for The 156th Open in 2028,” Walker said. He noted the significance of this announcement coinciding with the centenary of Jones’ victory and the club’s Royal status.

Before Royal Lytham’s hosting duties, Royal Birkdale is set to stage this year’s championship from July 16 to 19, with St Andrews hosting in 2027. Scottie Scheffler secured the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in 2025, marking his first Claret Jug win and fourth major title.

The decision reflects the ongoing evolution of golf’s prestigious events and the venues that showcase their rich history. As preparations unfold, the spotlight will be firmly on Royal Lytham, reminding fans that the legacy of The Open continues at its beloved links.
